Establishing the American Tour of Civil Service

The working of government in the United States is met with an enormous sense of distrust toward its functions. This skepticism, often fueled by political scandals, perceived inefficiencies, and controversial policies, has led many to question the effectiveness of their public institutions. As this distrust deepens, it not only undermines the fabric of democratic engagement but also poses significant challenges to societal cohesion and governance.

One method to solving this issue is to expose more people to the civil service in order to help people develop a better understanding of how the government works. This can be done through the creation of the American Tour of Civil Service.

What is the American Tour of Civil Service?

The American Tour of Civil Service would be a tour of service for all American citizens and mandatory for all American Citizens that turn the age of 18 upon completion of high school. Similar to mandatory tours of military service found in other countries, here every American will take part in a multi year tour of working at various positions at the local, state, and federal levels of government.

The benefit of such a system

  1. Establish a sense of national pride – the American Tour of Civil Service will provide a unique opportunity for citizens from diverse backgrounds to work together. This kind of exposure will not only help people gain a better understanding of how their government works, but also will help to promote social cohesion and foster a sense of mutual understanding.
  1. Enhancing workforce employability – the service will equip participants with valuable skills that are transferable to their future careers. By engaging in roles related to infrastructure, education, healthcare, industry and environmental conservation, participants will have a better understanding on what skills their society will need.
  1. Promoting Civic Engagement – Engaging citizens in civil service will instill a sense of commitment to civic duty and community participation. Such involvement will better shape citizens to be more engaged and willing to help promote change and serve when needed.
  1. Reducing Social Inequality – the American Tour of Civil Service will provide all participants with educational opportunities and real life experience leading to an increase in social mobility.

Details of the system

American Tour of Civil Service, would be a 2 and a half year program broken into three segments. A local tour of service, a state tour of service, and a federal tour of services. Upon the completion of High School students will be placed first in a local government office, where they will shadow and perform a range of legislative and administrative tasks. Afterwards they will then be placed in a state agency followed by a federal service tour. Once a person finishes their tour, they will then be free to decide what to pursue next.

The outcome of the system

The American Tour of Civil Service, would produce a net positive to the greater American society. One of the most notable benefits lies in its impact on education. The American Tour of Civil Service would reshape our educational system by educating people to have a better understanding of the inner workings of society. This exposure will drive people to see what kind of future path they would like to participate in.

Moreover, The American Tour of Civil Service will foster a sense of national pride and unity. And help make better informed decisions. In the end, The American Tour of Civil Service will fundamentally help improve civil society and fundamentally move America forward and help protect our democratic institutions.
